In preparations for this years L2H and Australian IRC Regatta in Hobart come January, today, Saturday Vice Commodore, Barrie McIndoe started the measuring process of Ambition for Mick and Mel Jones.
Mick had an early start to get his boat up to Home point to pull it out of the water on the tide to do the below water line measurements and checks, we also completed the Rig measurements. Having had their boat previously weighed, all that is left is the in water measurement of draught and overhangs along with the sails.
This is a significant step for offshore and extended coastal racing in the north of the state, with the removal of the necessity for owners to take their boats to Hobart to have them measured for IRC.
IRC or International Rating Certificate is a World Sailing recognised International Rating System providing design based time correction factors for sailing. Whilst IRC is an owner driven rule, the calculator(Formulae) is unpublished and based on measurement and data input only.
The biggest hurdle and major cost in carrying out a measurement is the weighing of boats. this can be minimised by owners grouping together to share the setup costs of crane and load cell.
If there are any owners who are interested or contemplating going down this path please contact the Vice Commodore Barrie McIndoe to start the process and he can coordinate for several boats to be weighed consecutively.
