2020 Blockbuster done, 2021 will be Big!

Published Mon 24 Feb 2020

The 2020 Tamar Marine Blockbuster, brought some of the best sailing conditions we have see for the season, with a light sea breeze Saturday, providing perfect conditions for the close to forty boat fleet, strongly supporting the new Blockbuster date.

Sunday started with a glass out, prior to a faint NNE getting the fleet under way, and slowly clocking to the North and filling for races 6 to 8 keeping mark boat crews busy.

On the Bravo course hosted thirteen Sabots and Chris Symonds and Fayellen Symonds in the Hansa 303 had some great racing with many of the development fleet contesting their first regatta. Penny Tassicher took the Development win in Priceless on 6 points from Jock McNeill in Wave Rider on 14 points with Brooke Teahan third in Cool Change on 16 points. Senior Sabots Elysha

Jones took the win in Running on Empty, brother Liam kept Elysha on her toes taking wins in race 5 and 6 to be second overall on 10 points with Oliver Whitton in Under Pressure third on 14 points.

Thirty two boats over five classes contested Alpha Course with the eleven B14s and NS14s taking equal billing for largest fleet on the course. The Sabres were back, thanks to the Sabre and NS14 Class for putting the Blockbuster on their traveller series. John McMahon and Matthew Price had a series long battle to be tied on points, John's extra first place gave him the win in The Average White Boat from Matthew in Zap, third place went to Paul Matthews in Xenica. Laser numbers were down with the Worlds and other racing in South Ellen Hillcoat took the win in Cheeky after a close contest with David Stuttead on yardstick.

Scott Wilkie and Lucas Foerder sailed a strong regatta in Serenity to take out the NS14s on 7 points, with Sam and Lindy Bailey second in Sundaze, finishing strongly with a couple of wins on 11 points with Darren Eggins and Alistair Lord third in Viva La Vida.

The largest B14 fleet in years was dominated by Kristy Gray and Julian Salter with six wins, a sixth and a OCS to take out the class in Pinky and the Brain, with Robbie Hunt and Dylan Gore second on 11 points in The Hitcher, the Phantom took third for Steve Miller and Clare Dabner. That’s Blockbuster 2020 done and dusted, huge thanks to Tamar Marine, Ronstan and all the entrants and volunteers.

Looking forward to seeing all the entrants and a lot more back for the 21st anniversary of the first Blockbuster, with the Mark Turnbull and Nick Partridge and the States 49er fleet, and the 20th Anniversary of the current format, one not to be missed!
